What You Can Expect from Counseling at Barnum Counseling

Below, Ali answers a few common questions about what to expect from counseling.

What will happen at my first appointment?

At your first appointment, Ali will assess your needs. (Sometimes this takes two appointments.) She wants to learn more about you and what you’re experiencing. Together, you and Ali will also begin to understand and define your goals.

How Long Does Each Therapy Session Last?

The length of each counseling session can vary depending on your situation. Typically, sessions last 45 to 60 minutes.

How many counseling sessions will we need?

Once Ali completes her assessment, she will create a customized action plan for you. As part of her action plan, Ali will recommend the length of your therapy based on the goals you and she agree to accomplish.

What will Ali include in my action plan?

Action plans contain a summary of the skills and tools you and Ali will work on together. You may see things like: coping strategies, organization, communication, problem solving, building purpose and meaning for life, and re-discovering yourself after a major life event. Keep in mind that every action plan is different because Ali tailors it to your specific needs.

What therapeutic strategies does Ali use for counseling?

Ali uses a blend of research-based therapeutic approaches. She often uses a combination of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) in her treatment plans.

Can I expect counseling to be uncomfortable?

Some of what you experience might be painful at times. This is not unusual. In fact, it’s actually is very normal to feel uncomfortable. But don’t worry. You and Ali will walk together through the discomfort. In the end, you’ll experience healing, growth, and greater fulfillment in your life by working through the pain.
