Changes in Behavior and Mood
One of the most noticeable signs of mental health struggles is a sudden or significant change in behavior and mood. Pay attention when you observe someone becoming withdrawn, isolating themselves from social activities they previously enjoyed, or displaying uncharacteristic mood swings. They may seem more irritable, sad, or anxious than usual. These shifts can indicate some kind of struggle that requires attention and support.
Loss of Interest or Enjoyment
If you notice someone losing interest in activities they once loved or showing a lack of enthusiasm towards things they used to enjoy, it might be a sign of mental health challenges. A person struggling with depression or other mental health challenges often experiences a diminished sense of pleasure and motivation, called anhedonia. Their once vibrant spark may appear dulled. They may seem disengaged from the world and those around them.
Changes in Sleep Patterns and Energy Levels
Keep an eye out for any significant changes in sleep patterns and energy levels. Insomnia or sleeping excessively, persistent fatigue, or a notable decrease in their overall energy can indicate that someone is struggling mentally. These disruptions in sleep and energy can be indicators of underlying mental health challenges. Those challenges include depression or anxiety.
Weight and Appetite Fluctuations
Unexplained weight loss or gain, coupled with noticeable changes in appetite, can be signs of mental health challenges. Pay attention if someone you know experiences sudden changes in their eating habits. It could be a loss of appetite leading to weight loss or an increase in food intake leading to weight gain. These changes may reflect emotional distress or an unhealthy coping mechanism.
Increased Irritability and Anger
A person who is struggling with their mental health might exhibit increased irritability, short temper, or unexplained anger. They may react strongly to minor triggers or become easily frustrated. They may appear to be overreacting to situations that would not usually evoke such responses. If you notice frequent outbursts or a heightened level of irritability in someone you know, it is important to approach them with empathy and understanding.
Social Withdrawal and Isolation
A person dealing with mental health challenges may gradually withdraw from social interactions and isolate themselves from friends, family, and loved ones. They may cancel plans at the last minute, decline invitations, or avoid situations where they have to interact with others. If you notice someone becoming increasingly isolated, it is important to reach out to them and offer support.
Expressions of Hopelessness or Suicidal Thoughts
One of the most alarming signs of mental health struggles is when someone expresses feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, or talks about suicide. Take any direct or indirect references to self-harm or suicide seriously. It is important to respond immediately by reaching out to them, encouraging them to seek professional help, and involving a trusted person, such as a mental health professional or helpline (988).
