How Pets Contribute to Good Mental Health

The bond between humans and their pets are unique, undeniable, and strong. Everywhere you look, there are people spoiling their pets and treating them like they are human babies. Despite their cuteness and companionship, though, there are studies that show positive effects that our pets can have on our health.

Lowers Stress

There are many reasons why pets are good for our mental health. To start, they are able to reduce stress due to the fact that having a pet can lead to a decreased level of cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone in our bodies that is related to stress. It is important to have lowered cortisol as high levels can have a negative impact on our mental health. Having a strong bond with our pets therefore can help individuals feel more relaxed and at ease.

Lowers Blood Pressure

Our beloved pets also have the capability of lowering our blood pressure. This can be beneficial for those who suffer from hypertension or other cardiovascular challenges. Studies show this positive impact is likely due to spending time with our pet and the calming effect this has on our body.

Emotional Support

Along with these two positive physical effects, our furry friends can also provide emotional support, which helps to reduce feelings of loneliness and can increase feelings of social support. This is especially true for those who may have difficulty connecting with others and is most important for those who may be suffering from depression and anxiety.

Mood Boosting

Another important benefit is that our pets have the ability to cheer us up! Spending time with a pet can be a fun and enjoyable experience. This joyful time can help to improve our mood and our overall well-being. This is also beneficial for those who may struggle with depression, and other mood disorders.

Reduces Suicide Risk

Research has also shown that pets can make suicide less likey. The strength and nature of the relationship with a pet can influence this effect and having a pet can also increase a sense of belongingness. This relationship and sense of feeling not so alone is what reduces the desire to attempt suicide. Further, pets can provide individuals with a sense of responsibility and purpose, which is important for those struggling with their mental health.

Review

Overall, pets can have a powerful and positive impact on our mental health. Our beloved, furry friends have the ability to reduce stress, lower our blood pressure, increase social support, boost our mood, and reduce suicidal ideation. Whether it is a cat, dog, or any other type of pet that you share a strong bond with, they are an important and valuable addition to your family, and the benefits of pet ownership are numerous and significant.
