It’s often tempting to start creating New Years goals by making a list of things you want to accomplish in the new year, but often, this process can feel overwhelming. Instead of wracking your brain to think about different goals to pursue, creating a vision board can be a helpful way to visually identify your goals.
What is a vision board?
A vision board is often a literal board, covered with images of things an individual would like to achieve. Vision boards have enough space to display images for goals you have in multiple areas of your life and can serve as a visual reminder of what you’re working towards.
Grab some supplies
To make your vision board, you’ll need some magazines that you don’t mind cutting apart or images you find online, a poster board, scissors, and some glue. Take your time going through images that call out to you in some way, but don’t overanalyze the images that you choose. One technique you can use is to go through all images and pull what you like first and then plan to piece together only what makes sense to you when you’re ready to assemble your board. Try to choose images that reflect multiple areas of your life, such as work, home, and hobbies.
Assemble your board
Lay your images on your poster board in a way that makes sense to you. You may choose to cut or alter your images in some way to fit the board in the way you’d like them to look. You can arrange your images however you choose, whether that’s grouped together by area of your life, in a timeline-style structure, or with no general pattern. When you’re ready, attach the images to the board with glue.
Pull goals from the art
When your vision board is complete, reflect on the images that you’ve chosen and create measurable goals that reflect your art and what you’d like to achieve in the new year. Write a list that reflects what you’ve chosen and keep that list near your board. The art making process helps us to unlock what is truly in our minds, even if we have a hard time communicating it through words.
Reference your vision board throughout the year
As you work through your goals throughout the year, it can be helpful to reference the vision board you made to inspire and motivate yourself. You can even keep your vision board in a place where you can reference it easily and often so that you’re constantly reminded of the goals that you’d like to achieve, and remind yourself to put in the work for yourself. When the year is complete, you can look back on this piece to remind yourself of all of your hard work and the accomplishments you have made throughout the year.
