Finding the Right Fit in Therapy

Why is Finding the Right Fit in Therapy Important?

Just like a pair of shoes, neither therapists nor therapeutic approaches offer a one-size-fits all approach. If you’re in the process of researching your options for therapy, you might find that there are many different clinicians who offer a variety of services, approaches, and specialties. If you’re thinking that pretty much any therapist could offer the service you might need, you are incorrect. Understanding more about what each clinician offers can help you understand more about how to go about finding the right fit in therapy.

Different specialties

Think about what specific issue you want to attend therapy for. While most clinicians are trained in basic knowledge about many different diagnosis and disorders, it is often the case that providers choose specialties that they are truly knowledgeable about. Some providers specialize in specific areas such as anxiety, depression, grief, or working with couples. Most providers also work with a certain age range, such as children, adolescents, or adults.

When searching for a clinician, think about what you’re struggling with, as well as your age and narrow your search based on these factors. Finding a clinician who specializes in your specific treatment area will help ensure that you receive adequate care for your current challenges.  Finding the right fit in therapy is important.

Different certifications

Therapists also hold different kinds of certifications, credentials, and licenses that are specific to the training they have received as part of their journey to becoming a therapist. There are many modalities that can help you in your therapeutic process, so finding the one that can work for you is an excellent first step. When you discover a good fit, finding a certified individual who offers your specialty is a great way to find an appropriate fit.

As an art therapist, I know that a unique approach I bring to my clients is the opportunity to make therapeutic art in session in order to process difficult emotions and communicate in another way. My training as an art therapist has been inherent to the safety and appropriate use of art in session, that many other clinicians cannot offer ethically. There are so many types of therapy–art, music, trauma, and yoga, to name a few–that might work for you, but narrowing down a certified provider is imperative.

Different services

Therapists from many areas also provide different services, including, but not limited to, both in person and telehealth services. Choosing the right service for you can help you attend sessions regularly, and finding the right fit will help you progress through your goals. Consider what services you may need on an individual level that can help you succeed. Maybe meeting with a therapist virtually fits better into your schedule, or perhaps you enjoy the drive before and after your session to continue processing your feelings. Whatever you prefer, finding the right clinician to offer what you need is important.

Life experience and background

Something you may consider in your search for a clinician is the characteristics about the therapist you choose. Do you have a preference of gender identity of the person you meet with? How about their experience as a parent? Are you looking for someone older or younger? What is most important to you about the person you meet with every week?

Most therapy directories offer the option for therapists to add details about their life experience in order to connect with a potential client. Exploring your options can help you choose who you might mesh with best, which can help the therapeutic relationship feel more natural.

Whatever you’re looking for, I bet that type of therapist exists. Prioritize your own needs and wants when looking for a provider. It’s not easy to tell your own life story to another individual but prioritizing your comfort can help make the process a little bit easier!
