Five Ways to Reduce Stress While Traveling

Want to learn how to reduce stress when traveling? Travel can be stressful. Especially with changing policies, delayed or canceled flights, and tight financial times. With the holidays right around the corner, you may start to find yourself struggling with the stressors that come along with traveling at this time of the year. Fortunately, there are ways to stay calm during your travels so that you can fully enjoy your trip and return refreshed and less stressed.

Stay flexible

There are so many unpredictable things that can occur while traveling–your flight might be canceled, you could lose your luggage, or you might get stuck in traffic on your way to the airport. Prepare yourself for potential scenarios that could impact your trip by developing contingency plans. Give yourself extra time in your plans for everything you do, pack your essentials in your carry-on, and remember what incidents are in your control.

Preparing for the worst case scenario, while hoping for the best can help you to feel settled and in control. Slow down, take a moment to relax and think clearly when something unexpected occurs, and make the decisions that are right for you if your plans are unexpectedly altered.

Get enough sleep

Cross country or international trips can make it tricky to navigate jet lag and adjust to a new timezone, and packing your travel days with sightseeing or social plans can leave you feeling exhausted. Prioritize your rest and aim for 7-8 hours of sleep per night during your trip. If you start feeling tired throughout the day, take a break to rest or take a nap. Running on fumes will only make you feel more stressed during your travels.

Incorporate wellness activities into your travel time

If you’re feeling stressed during your flight, consider using the time it takes to travel to your destination to engage in self-care activities. Plan in advance to download a comforting show, bring a favorite book, or create a playlist that helps you feel calm. You can even consider using your time as a passenger to work on a project like knitting or crochet, or to catch up on rest. Using your travel time to relax can help you to feel energized and ready to take on the day’s adventure when you land at your destination.

Stay connected to home

It can be extremely stressful to be away from home or other obligations during your time away, and if this is what is making you most stressed about your travel, consider staying connected to someone trusted in your hometown. Have a neighbor or trusted friend check in on your home, and keep you updated on any changes in obligations from activities you’re involved in while you’re away.

If it’s the comfort and safety of your home that you miss during travel, consider bringing a reminder of home with you while you travel. If it helps, bring your favorite blanket or sweatshirt that you love to use at home.

Plan something to look forward to when you return

Returning from vacation can sometimes be just as stressful as preparing to leave for a trip. If you know that you typically struggle with the adjustment to home after vacation, or develop the vacation blues after travel, plan something to look forward to upon your return. For example, scheduling lunch or dinner with a friend once you return can help you feel socially connected, and give you the opportunity to reminisce on your adventures with someone you care about.

Know that traveling can be difficult, and if you’re struggling, you’re not alone. Take time to relax and remind yourself what great things lie ahead once your trip begins.
